What is Divorce Plan in a Day mediation?
Mediation is a guided conversation where a neutral mediator helps you and your spouse work through decisions about your children, finances, property, and debts. The mediator helps you explore solutions, while you decide whether to agree.
Divorce Plan in a Day gives couples without attorneys a focused, full-day session to work toward a written agreement. Attorney/Mediator Carolyn M. Bone guides the discussion without taking sides or representing either spouse.
The goal is to make meaningful progress toward resolving your divorce. An agreement is not guaranteed, and mediation does not finalize your divorce—court filings and approval are separate steps.
A More Efficient Approach to Divorce
Many couples want a clear path forward through divorce, with less conflict, expense, and emotional strain.
Divorce Plan in a Day mediation offers a structured mediation process for couples who are ready to work toward an agreement. With guidance from a neutral mediator, you can discuss your priorities, explore practical solutions, and retain control over the decisions that affect your family.
The goal is to help you reach a thoughtful, written agreement while reducing the time and stress often associated with litigation. Every case is different, and mediation does not itself finalize your divorce. Court filings and approval are separate steps.

How It Works
1. Start with a conversation
Call 843-261-7025 to ask about availability and whether mediation is appropriate. Pro se Divorce Plan in a Day mediation is designed for couples who are representing themselves. Both spouses participate voluntarily and remain in control of whether to reach an agreement.
2. Prepare for a productive day
Gather recent pay information, tax returns, bank and retirement balances, a list of assets and debts, and monthly expenses. If you have children, bring proposed parenting schedules and school or childcare information. Identify your priorities, possible compromises, and practical solutions for your family. We provide all the materials you need to gather your financial information and outline a parenting plan ahead of time.
3. Work through the issues
Mediation is a conversation, not a trial. Carolyn M. Bone helps you communicate respectfully, identify options, and discuss parenting, support, property, and debts. Meetings may be together, separately, or both. You can meet in our Summerville office or virtually. We'll work around your preferences. You can ask questions about the process and are never required to accept a proposal.
4. Understand the mediator’s role
Carolyn serves as a neutral mediator, not an attorney for either spouse. She can explain the process and general legal principles, but cannot give individual legal advice, tell you whether an agreement is in your best interests, prepare legal pleadings, or decide your case. Consider an independent attorney’s advice before signing.
5. Plan the next steps
If you reach an agreement, Carolyn prepares a written summary of the terms. Making those terms enforceable generally requires appropriate Family Court documents and court approval. Carolyn cannot prepare those legal documents as your mediator (prohibited by our ethical rules), but can refer you to attorneys who handle filing and approval. Mediation does not itself finalize your divorce, but it can resolve about 95% of the work on your case- potentially saving thousands and months of time.
Some cases need another session. If you do not resolve everything, mediation may still narrow the issues; unresolved matters may require a court decision. An agreement is never guaranteed, and you will still need to file a case and ask the Court to approve your agreement and grant a divorce or separation.
Confidentiality and Communication
Mediation is confidential, subject to legal exceptions. In most circumstances, discussions cannot later be used in court.
Pro Se Mediation: $3,500 Flat Fee for a Full Day
A focused, full-day mediation session for self-represented parties. The goal is to come away with a complete, written settlement agreement that the parties can submit to the Court for approval. For the right cases, this can save months of time and thousands of dollars.
This process is not a good fit for every case. Confirm scheduling, payment terms, and the scope of services before booking. Court filings, court approval, and independent legal representation are separate from mediation- but we are happy to provide referrals.
Meet in our Summerville office or virtually across South Carolina. Call 843-261-7025, or use the Request form below. Please share only basic contact and scheduling information, not confidential case details.
1 / Do we need attorneys?
Attorneys are not required for mediation. Carolyn remains neutral and cannot give either spouse individual legal advice. Independent legal review is encouraged. Court filings and approval are separate.
2 / Who makes the decisions?
You make your own decisions, with the help of a mediator. This means a stranger (Court) is not making decisions about your family. The mediator is not a judge or your attorney.
3 / Can we still go to court if we don't agree?
If you don't reach an agreement, either side is free to go to court and ask a Judge to make the decisions.
4 / Do we still go to court at all?
Yes, you will still need to file a case and submit your agreement to the Court for approval (which turns it into a Court Order). We are not allowed by the ethical rules to both act as a mediator and an attorney in the same case, so we cannot file for you. However, we are happy to provide referrals to attorneys who can help and are familiar with this process. By participating in voluntary mediation, you should save thousands over traditional litigation.
5 / Is this only for couples who already agree on everything?
Nope, that's what mediation is for! We set aside a full day to help guide you to resolving financial and child-related issues, including custody, parenting time, child support, property and debt division, and spousal support. Mediation provides a clear, organized process for discussing your differences and working toward practical solutions.
